Key Stage 1: Developing Independent Learners
At Key Stage 1, we understand that children are at a crucial stage in their cognitive, social and emotional development. Therefore, our curriculum focuses on providing the best learning environment for learners to thrive.

At Al Maharat Private School, the Key Stage 1 curriculum focuses on developing independent learners by building upon the foundations that have been established in Foundation Stage. Through a highly engaging and diverse selection of learning experiences, we ensure that our learners are well rounded and confident as they progress through their Lower School journey.

Our Key Stage 1 learners are provided with full-time teaching assistants in Years 1 and 2, ensuring that they have excellent opportunities to access all aspects of the curriculum and reach their full potential. Formative and summative assessments are used to inform planning and teaching, allowing staff to maximise learning for each student.

Leadership opportunities

Leadership is an important attribute to have and as part of our Key Stage 2 curriculum, we give our learners a chance to hone this skill by providing them with responsibilities in the classroom, year group or even on a whole school level. We teach them the value of being organised, cooperative, accountable and the importance of teamwork through daily activities. In Year 6 especially, our Head Boy and Head Girl are the epitome of this, serving as fine examples to their peers.

By the end of Key Stage 2, each learner will have acquired a sound education, comprising knowledge of academics as well as values which allow them to become effective learners. With an attitude geared towards success and having developed qualities such as empathy, articulation and self-assurance, they are ready to take on the challenges that secondary education presents.

Physical Education

To foster a love of learning from an early age, we also promote physical development through specialist Physical Education (PE) lessons. The PE curricula are tailored to challenge each child’s abilities and enhance their coordination, balance, strength and stamina.

Learners are exposed, but not limited to at least 1 hour long PE session each week. They are taught a variety of sports and activities under the supervision of our highly trained PE teachers.

Educational Technology

At Al Maharat, we believe that educational technology (EdTech) has the potential to transform teaching and learning. We use EdTech to provide our learners with an optimal learning environment so they can take ownership of their own education.

We have a range of devices available, which include laptops, tablets and interactive whiteboards. Our teachers use these devices to provide learners with engaging and interactive learning experiences.

Parental Engagement

Open communication between home and school is crucial for our learners academic progress. We strive to keep parents up-to-date with their child's learning through weekly newsletters, parent’s evenings and an open door policy.

We encourage parents to stay involved with their child's learning journey and meet with teachers as frequently as possible. This is essential for us to ensure that all children have the best opportunity to reach their full potential. Through frequent engagements, we strive to ensure that their progress is tracked and supported in the most effective way.
